Our Hungry Hippo!

I was going to start from the beginning with the birth but I'm not one to tell short stories and that is one I want to remember so I'll post that one tomorrow since today is my son's two week birthday!
First night

With words and pictures here is what has been going on since we brought our son home.  I am realizing that there are a couple things that happened in the hospital that affect the last two weeks so I apologize in advance for mentioning them today and expanding tomorrow.
First bath

I am exhausted! We are exhausted.  We had no idea that when people said you don't get sleep with a newborn that you actually get NO sleep.  When Lucas was born he was suffocating on his vernix so he had to get all of that suctioned out of him which inflared his nostrils making it so he couldn't breathe through his nose and babies really only breathe through their nose so when he would be put on his back to sleep he would choke and spit up.  This has caused Kevin and me to stay up and hold him throughout the night.  This has transitioned to how we handle him at home.  His nose is ok now but he has yet to sleep on his own at night.  I know!
First walk

One of my major things was that he would not sleep with us.  We have tried to put him in his crib, a bassinet, his bouncer but at night it's a no go.  We're not giving up but we have yet to follow through.  Our doctor said that this is fine, we are doing fine and that some babies just need to be held more than other babies.  Our doctor's exact words today (third meeting with him) were "you just have a temperamental baby."  Well, there you have it, all my ideas of "perfection" out the door.  Sigh.  This baby also hasn't quite figured out night from day and LOVES 11 pm and 3 am.  These are his prime awake hours.
First Easter.  Quilt made by my sister Shira!

The doctor said that babies should have this figured out by now but once again we have a temperamental one so...  We are going to try and get on a better schedule which we had a plan for last night and as soon as we put him down in his crib he got the hiccups and was up for about two hours. I digress because I do love this kid more than anything but I also want to be honest that this is not easy.
Four generations
A very large positive we have going for us is that Lucas is healthy.  This is how the last two weeks have gone.  He was born at 8 lbs 4 oz.  Went down to 7 lbs 12 oz at a day old.  We went to our pediatrician at 4 days old and he was back up to 8 lbs 1 oz.
First real family photo!
At our one week appointment we were told that they look to make sure the baby is still gaining weight and that he should be back to his birth weight by two weeks.  Well at one week he had surpassed his birth weight and weighed 8 lbs 8 oz.  Our doctor said that babies gain about an ounce a day.  Our child had gained 7 ounces in three days!
So happy!

Well, we went back for our two-week check up today... 9 pounds 8 ounces! Yes, he gained a whole pound in one week!  Nursing has gone fabulously...well that's what they tell me because really I just feel like a food machine but I am thankful that we have had no issues with nursing.  I started calling him our hungry hippo last week and he lives up to his name;)

Looking like an angel
Today was my first day alone with Lucas.  We have had family or I have had Kevin every day since Lucas was born but today it was just me.  I actually think it went pretty well and I'll be honest I was scared especially since we had an exceptionally bad night last night.  I was pretty good about putting him down for naps (he slept most of the day which means we'll probably be up all night again) and since we had the doctor's appointment in the middle of the day it broke things up.
Second bath was so much better
Kevin has been an amazing father and partner throughout this.  We both knew that he would love our son but neither of us knew how fast and how much he would fall in love with this little guy.
First time checking out Mavericks and playing with my push present...a new lens!
Today he had to go back to work after four days off so last night after dinner, even though we are trying to have Lucas sleep on his own, Kevin went over to him, looked at me and said he's not really sleeping so I'm just going to hold him.  I can't say no to that!  He wants his daddy time in.  I could not be more in love!
Quite the poser!

Auntie Shira was an amazing help

My mom and her bestie holding each other's first grand baby.  They are in heaven.

With baby Fiona...older woman by 2 weeks;)

Already macking!

Happy two weeks my funny little boy!

Well, that's enough for now but I'm excited to keep track of everything we are doing.  I have literally always wanted to be a mother and I could not be happier to embark on this journey.
